Rainbow Horses Learning Centre

Rainbow Horses Learning Centre CIC

Specialist Alternative Education through Equine Assisted Learning activities.

Equine assisted learning is an experiential approach where learners are supported to learn through making their own decisions and discovering the consequences.

As well as learning through practical activities with the horses and other animals, at Rainbow Horses children and young people can work on English and maths skills and gain nationally recognised qualifications relating to animal care and employment skills. Aspects of science, history, geography and art are covered through project work related to horses.

One of our particular strengths is supporting emotional wellbeing. Through observing horse behaviour and interactions we build on children's understanding of their emotions and behaviour, and their relationships with other people. Children learn how to understand non-verbal communication, explore the feelings of others and develop greater empathy and social understanding. Working with large animals such as horses increases confidence and children develop a sense of pride in their ability to handle the horses.

We are education and therapy professionals with many years' experience of working with children & young people of all abilities on the autism spectrum, both in mainstream education and in specialist schools. We also work with those who have other social or communication difficulties and have worked extensively with children who have issues related to attachment and trauma.

Although we occasionally offer an experience of sitting on a horse, riding is not part of the education programme.
